Some thoughts, lessons, and/or reflections from the day:

  • I had a Saturday when I should have been able to sleep in but I woke up at my normal workday time with aching knees and couldn’t get back to sleep, so I got up and went through some photos from the past few days and did some writing.
  • I’ve found restlessness can either be annoying or put to good use . . . it’s usually my choice.
  • Looking at some of the wildlife and nature scenes that God has allowed me to photograph makes me eager to capture more of it.
  • Paying attention to the work of God in our life ought to make us want to see Him do more in and through us.
  • I played some Wii Fitness this morning but the aching in my knees seemed to keep me from being as focused as usual . . . my normal “fitness age” is 20 or 21 but today it was 27.
  • Discomfort in one part of our life will usually affect the rest of our life also.  God says that when one part of the body suffers, the rest of the body suffers too . . . this is true as an individual and as the body of Christ.
  • After lunch we headed out in search of scenes that wanted to be photographed. 🙂
  • We started by searching the area where we found a snowy owl last week but found nothing to photograph there.
  • Just because an opportunity existed in the past, doesn’t mean it still exists . . . it may or may not.
  • Our next stop was along the shoreline of Lake Michigan where I snapped a few photos but there was nothing that really caught my eye enough to spend much time there.
  • Observation is key to staying in step with God.  Sometimes a situation may seem likely to be where God wants us involved but a closer look may reveal that it isn’t the right place for us.
  • Finally we headed to a rural area where a snowy owl had reportedly been seen the past few days.  As we drove and kept watch, we saw a white lump a great distance away in a field and it turned out to be a snowy owl.
  • You may not always find what you’re looking for, but you’re more likely to find it if you are looking.
  • Today’s photo is actually several of them that I took of the snowy owl we found.   It was a long way out in the field and I had to max out my zoom and do significant cropping to make the owl more visible than just a speck, but it was still fun to see and photograph.

Here are some thoughts, lessons, and/or reflections from the day:

  • With a forecast of freezing rain, ice, and snow, I went to bed last night knowing the school was at least on a two-hour delay so I could sleep in some.  They ended up cancelling school for the day, so I didn’t go into work until after daylight.
  • My truck doors were frozen shut this morning but I was able to coax them open with a little gentle force. 🙂
  • The roadways were a combination of clear, slush, and ice but I managed to make it to work and up the hill without too much difficulty.
  • I started to clear the snow from the walks this morning but discovered that it was safer to leave the light covering of snow in place rather than expose the ice underneath.
  • Today’s devotional writing was focused on serving with endurance.  Sometimes we think that because serving is what we’re supposed to do, it ought to be easier than what it often is.  Endurance is one of the traits that keeps us going when serving becomes difficult.
  • The birds were very active outside my window while I was writing.  There was a small skirmish between a woodpecker and a flicker, but other than that all the different kinds of birds seemed to get along today.
  • I’ve always been able to get lost in books — it used to always be in reading them but now it is more often in writing them.
  • I kept busy writing until mid-afternoon and then turned my attention to getting the building ready for the weekend . . . I should have taken a lunch break between the two tasks.
  • As I cleaned the building I caught sight of the early stages of the sunset as the clouds began to show color around the edges.
  • There reached a time as I was cleaning that it seemed as if God was saying, “Just stop and look!   Be still and know that I am God!”  So, I stopped and looked. 🙂
  • For a day that I thought would be a shorter work day than a typical Friday, I managed to make it just as long as usual.
  • Today’s photo is one that I took during my “stop and look” segment of the day.  God lit up the sky with a glimpse of His beauty and I was fortunate enough to see it and capture a piece of it.

Some thoughts, lessons, and/or reflections from the day:

  • Fifty degrees feels a lot warmer after a week of single digit temperatures than it does after a week of ninety degree temperatures. 🙂
  • The rain and warm temperatures worked together to melt a lot of snow . . . just in time for an expected temperature drop and more snow tomorrow.
  • I took my truck in for service today.  Regular service helps to catch potential problems before they become major issues.  Life is somewhat like that.
  • I received a call today from a prison chaplain I had sent a box of Impact Prayer Ministry resources to.  It was very encouraging to hear the excitement both about sharing the resources with the inmates and in using it themselves.
  • God knows what I need even before I do and He is better equipped to provide it than I am to obtain it on my own.
  • After a longer break than anticipated, I resumed work on another set of 13 weeks of daily devotions with each week wrapped around an aspect of how we ought to serve.
  • Today’s writing was on different ways we should serve with compassion.
  • For most of us, compassion is not a natural reaction to the sufferings of others . . . but it should be a supernatural reaction by God’s Spirit within us.
  • The source of our compassion ought to be our recognition of the suffering Christ did on our behalf.
  • When we “suffer with” someone, we are better equipped to walk out of the suffering together than if we just try to “give advice” from a distance.
  • By mid-day, the rain finally let up and the birds came out to enjoy the spring-like weather.
  • My truck was done after work so we picked it up and decided to go out looking for photo opportunities after a late lunch.
  • The rain returned by the time we were done with lunch and we struck out in our search for the snowy owl we had seen last week.
  • Our stop at the lake found a heavy fog lifting from the ice and shrouding the lighthouses.
  • The view was interesting but very difficult to photograph.
  • Today’s photo is of one of my morning visitors.  Sometimes I’m pretty sure the birds like to pose for the camera.

Some thoughts, lessons, and/or reflections from the day:

  • I woke up out of a strange dream this morning with two minutes left before the alarm would have gone off.
  • In my dream, there were shepherds who should have been caring for their sheep but they were all huddled around a campfire singing and carrying on while the sheep wandered off.  As I woke up I was crying out, “Wait!  Wait!  That’s not how it’s supposed to be.”
  • I pray that God would make me more observant toward those I should notice and less distracted by those I am comfortable with.
  • A second day of hazy skies and gray weather made me long for some warmth and sunshine.
  • Drizzle and freezing temps are still not a good combination.
  • At least we’ve had enough winter that most people seem to finally realize that the road may require extra caution.
  • Just because the drizzle hasn’t frozen on the surfaces you have encountered, doesn’t mean it hasn’t frozen on the places you are headed . . . discovered that while taking trash out. 😦
  • What always has been isn’t necessarily what always will be.  God wants us to pay attention to where we’ve been, where we are, and where we’re headed.
  • While the praise of people isn’t the motivation behind my writing, it is encouraging when a person calls to ask permission to use what I’ve written in a small group study they are leading.
  • Balancing what you need to do with what you are called to do can be difficult, especially when they don’t seem to be the same things.
  • We had network equipment replaced due to a recall, but their job was to simply replace the equipment and not to set it up to match the function of what they removed.  I guess my IT hat worked as the reports from people this morning said that the lost connectivity had been restored.
  • Putting together promotional material for the different aspects of the prayer ministry helps me to better see what God is doing.  It’s one thing to live it, it’s another thing to write down what it is.
  • With the dreary looking day I took no new photos, so today’s photo is a compilation of three photos that I had printed today to use for a drawing at the upcoming camp conference.

Some thoughts, lessons, and/or reflections from the day:

  • I was awake far enough ahead of my alarm going off this morning that I was actually able to go back to sleep . . . and then took the longest time figuring out what the annoying buzzing sound was in my dream. 🙂
  • With no fresh snow overnight, I had to scrape frost off my truck windows this morning.
  • A foggy morning and a temperature below freezing made for some icy spots on the roads this morning.
  • Not all dangerous situations are obvious, but the circumstances which create them often are.
  • God desires that we seek, and use, wisdom that pays attention to the conditions which would bring danger into our life so that we’re not caught off guard.
  • What we step in often follows us even in places we wish it didn’t.  (Thought while cleaning ice melt residue off tile floors.)
  • I ordered more books to share with camp leaders at several different conferences over the next few months.
  • Trusting God to provide can be difficult, but not trusting Him to provide is even more difficult.
  • I spent some time refining the Growing Strong spiritual growth teaching concept to make it more available to places that would want to host it.
  • Just because my implementation of an idea God puts in my mind doesn’t work, it doesn’t mean the idea is bad — perhaps I simply need to listen more clearly and figure out how and when God wants the idea implemented.
  • The morning fog and haze never really did clear up during the day.  Even at mid-day, the sun trying to shine through the haze looked more like the moon than the sun.
  • Today’s photo is of a woodpecker that I managed to catch a glimpse of.  No matter how my day goes, at least I’m not banging my head against a tree looking for something to eat. 🙂

Some thoughts, lessons, and/or reflections from the day:

  • My mind and/or body seems to anticipate the alarm going off in the mornings but I could get more rest if I was able to go back to sleep during the half hour between my waking up and the alarm going off.
  • Layers seemed to be the early morning theme — my truck windows had a layer of ice on top of a layer of snow on top of a layer of ice that all needed removed before I could go anywhere.
  • The wet snow and drizzle combination made me appreciate my clothing layers as I began the workday clearing walks.
  • Removing an inch of wet snow seems to be as much work as clearing six inches of dry powdery snow.
  • Keeping floors clean is virtually impossible this time of year so I settle for safety in my use of ice melt outside . . . which ends up inside. 🙂
  • With the current prayer guide focused on “Seek”, it seemed fitting to write on today with the topic of “Find”.
  • While I like to have uninterrupted blocks of time with God when I write the weekly prayer guides, that doesn’t always happen.
  • It is always interesting to see how many layers of interruptions being interrupted that I can manage at once. 🙂
  • One of the interruptions was a flooded bathroom.  I tried to tell the preschoolers it was preparing them for a lesson about Noah . . . I don’t think they were amused.
  • I suppose interruptions are only interruptions because we make plans that we think are more important than anything else that happens.
  • Even with the variety of tasks that I was unaware God had planned for my day, I managed to get next week’s prayer guide written and scheduled to be published and sent out next Sunday.
  • By early afternoon the warmer temperature had brought out a wide variety of birds to resume their berry harvest.
  • Today’s photo is one that I think could make a challenging jigsaw puzzle . . . or an intricate painting for someone so gifted.
  • The melting snow will likely freeze tonight, so I’ll need to remember to use caution on my drive to work tomorrow.  It’s probably a good idea to use caution all the time.  🙂

Page 7 was a Sunday and I had the privilege of preaching at the North Wayne Mennonite Church, so I’ll add the main points of the sermon to today’s page in addition to the “thoughts, lessons, and/or reflections” from the day.  🙂

I had planned on using the sermon outline and points that I shared at Deer Run last week but as I prepared, God led me in a different direction and I ended up with a message today titled, “A God Who Will Be FOUND“.  Many Christians are familiar with the words from Jeremiah where God says, “I know the plans I have for you . . . “.  Yet what is often missed when that verse is quoted is the context of a people whose time of exile in Babylon is nearly up and a reminder to them that to experience the plans God is talking about, they must seek Him with a whole heart so that He will be found.  Using the word “FOUND” as the outline, here are the main points we considered this morning.

We must seek a God who will be . . .

  • Faithful:  In 2 Timothy 2:11-13, we find a God who responds to us in manner similar to our approach to him . . . until it comes to our unfaithfulness.  Even when we are not faithful, He is always faithful.  We can be assured that when we seek Him with our whole heart, He will be faithful in His promise that He will be found.  God’s faithfulness doesn’t depend on our faithfulness, but it ought to produce a greater faithfulness in us as we seek to live like Christ.
  • Observant:  In 1 Peter 3:10-12, we read that “God’s eyes are always upon the righteous and His ears are attentive to their prayers.”  It is easy to feel overlooked by people around you that are just as busy as you are or simply have no desire to notice others.  God, on the other hand, is always observant and never misses what is going on in the lives of His children.  Even in the midst of a generation whose every thought was inclined toward evil all of the time, “Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.”  We can rest assured that the God who will be found can, will, and does observe us even when we are surrounded by evil.
  • Understanding:  Hebrews 4:15-16 lets us know that we have a God who can sympathize with our struggles and weaknesses.  It is easy to go through life feeling misunderstood because, frankly, no one else can see accurately into our heart and motives.  Even more reassuring than having someone who understands when we choose to do right, God understands the struggles we face when we are tempted to choose what is wrong.  Rather than demanding perfection that we will never achieve on our own, through Jesus we have a mediator between God and us who understands and can speak accurately and lovingly on our behalf.  The God who will be found understands us completely and still wants to be found by us.
  • Nurturing:  When I read Matthew 23:37, I hear great sadness in the voice of Jesus as He looks out over Jerusalem and longs to gather the people to Himself “as a hen gathers her chicks under her wing.”  God has not simply called us to Himself and left it up to us to make it to Him on our own.  As His children, He cares for us and nurtures us with a love that is more complete and pure than any other.  He makes it clear that it is He who has provided the gifts of leadership throughout the ages for the purpose of building up the body to complete maturity with Christ as the head.  When we seek a God who will be found, we find a God who nurtures us and cares for us as His own — because we are!
  • Decisive:  In 2 Peter 3, we find Peter warning individuals that people would make the claim that Jesus was not going to return.   Those spreading such rumors would point to the amount of time that had passed and claim that everything was happening on earth just as it had since the beginning of time.  These “scoffers” would show up and mock those looking forward to the return of Christ.  Peter explains to his readers that God is not slow, as the world counts slowness, rather He is patiently waiting in order to give people everywhere the opportunity to repent.  But there will be a day when that patience has run its course and Jesus returns “like a thief in the night.”  On that day there will be no question of who belongs to Jesus and who doesn’t.  The decision will have been made by us and proclaimed by the Son of Man.  When we seek a God who will be found, we find a God who is decisive and holds fast to what has been decided.

So, does this sound like the God you are seeking?  I pray that it is not only the God you are seeking, but also the God you have found!

Here are some other thoughts, lessons, and/or reflections from the day:

  • Today was a “multi-hat” day — both literally and figuratively. 🙂
  • The cold air temperature made multiples hats beneficial as I cleared snow from the sidewalks this morning.
  • Once the snow was cleared, I took off those hats and put on the “cleaning hat” as I took the floor scrubber to the floors while the building was still empty — at least when I began.
  • With the floors cleaned, I took off that hat and put on a “trash collectors hat” as I emptied some of the trash cans to get ready for the day.
  • With the building ready, I put on my traveling hat as I made the drive to Dowagiac to share with the North Wayne Mennonite Church this morning.
  • Once at the church building, I set aside the other hats so that only my “worshiper hat” remained . . . at least until I was needed to run the song lyrics computer and had to put on my “A/V tech hat”. 🙂
  • Eventually I was able to put on my “preacher hat” and share the message God had given me for the morning.
  • I suppose there were some other “hats” throughout the day, but that was at least most of the morning ones.
  • I am thankful for the abilities God has given me which allows such variety in my life.
  • I am thankful for the wonders of photography which allows me to revisit some great family times from the past year.
  • I am thankful for the opportunities I have to preach.
  • One of the hats I didn’t wear today was “photographer”, so today’s photo is one from our trip to Silver Beach yesterday.  Even on a cold snowy day, the beauty of this scene caught my eye.
