Encouragement and Prayer: Provide Justice to the Fatherless! (06/22/21)

~

While I continue working on what a return to the live or recorded audio/video broadcasts will be, I will still leave some written encouragement for each day.  This week’s focus will be on God being a Father to the fatherless and His desire that we model that characteristic as well.

“Do not deprive the alien or the fatherless of justice.”
Deuteronomy 24:17 (NIV)

As we celebrate Father’s Day to begin the week, this week we will focus our prayer emphasis on God’s concern for the fatherless.  As we pray to be more Christ-like, we must pray that our response to the fatherless would be the same as God’s.  There are many in our community who live as fatherless regardless of the presence of a dad in their life.

Pray that you would make the most of every opportunity to see that the fatherless around you receive justice.  Pray that you would be mindful of how your actions either help or hinder true justice for the fatherless.  Pray that you would have wisdom in being an advocate for those with no voice.

Pray for discernment and wisdom to see beyond and through the divisiveness of this world so that you would love others as God loves both you and them.

In prayer,
Tom

Encouragement and Prayer: Defend the Fatherless! (06/21/21)

While I continue working on what a return to the live or recorded audio/video broadcasts will be, I will still leave some written encouragement for each day.  This week’s focus will be on God being a Father to the fatherless and His desire that we model that characteristic as well.

“He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the alien, giving him food and clothing.”  Deuteronomy 10:18 (NIV)

Pray for the courage and wisdom to stand up for the fatherless when it comes to them having their needs met.  Pray that your love of people would be seen in the ways you defend and provide for the fatherless.  Pray that God is seen in you as you take up the cause of the fatherless.

Pray for discernment and wisdom to see beyond and through the divisiveness of this world so that you would love others as God loves both you and them.

My Dad (Poem and Audio)

My Dad (Poem and Audio)

This is a reposting to combine the audio of my sharing the poem during the closing of the 2016 Father’s Day worship service at Deer Run with the words I had published two years earlier for Father’s Day 2014.

My Dad

It’s getting late,
     I should be in bed.
But it seems like a poem
     is stuck in my head.
It rolls around in there
     and seems to want out.
To be set in print,
     to stop rolling about.

So here I am,
     with keyboard and mouse.
Alone in the basement
     of a quiet house.
The topic is fitting –
     all good, nothing bad.
A poem’s trying to form
     that would honor my dad!

A harder worker,
     I surely don’t know.
He taught me so much
by the seeds he did sow.
And while there was much
he did plant in the ground.
It was seeds full of wisdom
     that did always abound.

I know there were days
     that he probably thought.
Will these boys of mine
     ever do what they ought?
I’m so very glad
that my dad still can see.
Just what kind of man,
     that I’m growing to be.

As I look back in time
     and down through the years.
I pray that my life now
has made up for the tears.
I learned how to work
and I learned how to play.
From my mom and dad
as they showed me the way.

Dad worked very hard —
     in fact, he still does.
It’s his way of life,
     not just something that was.
But even in work,
     there was room for fun.
Dad helped me to see,
I needed both, not just one.

Some days at the sawmill,
we’d walk home through the wood.
And jump in the pond,
     like every boy should.
There always were chores
     that had to be done.
But when they were finished,
there was still time for fun.

Dad doesn’t say much,
     but that is okay.
For I understand,
I am much the same way.
His actions speak louder
     than words ever can.
I know he’s beside me,
     as my biggest fan.

There is so much I do,
as I step back and look.
That I learned from my dad,
it can’t be found in a book.
Dad showed me how
     to invest life in life.
As he builds up his children
     and loves his own wife.

I’m sure there are things
that are clear in my mind.
That if I could see now,
     something different I’d find.
My recollection —
     of vacations, you see.
Dad would stop anywhere,
as long as it was free!

State parks were the norm,
     of places we’d go.
We could have lots of fun
     without spending much dough.
So when I grew older,
     and out on my own.
I have often returned
to where those seeds were sown.

To visit some places
     where memories were made.
I’ve taken my family,
and we’d walk in the shade.
The example that I saw,
     in the childhood I had.
Was a home full of love,
and a great mom and dad.

I could go on,
with this poem for a while.
When I think of my dad,
     I can’t help but smile.
He lives life each day,
to the best that he can.
And when I grow up,
I want to be like that man!

As the day came to a close with Father’s Day just around the corner, this poem began to form in my mind. I am thankful for the dad that God has given me and I pray that I honor him not just with some words, but with my life.

Encouragement and Prayer: A Father to the Fatherless! (06/20/21)

~

While I continue working on what a return to the live or recorded audio/video broadcasts will be, I will still leave some written encouragement for each day.  This week’s focus will be on God being a Father to the fatherless and His desire that we model that characteristic as well.

“A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.  God sets the lonely in families, he leads forth the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.”
Psalm 68:5-6 (NIV)

As we celebrate Father’s Day to begin the week, this week we will focus our prayer emphasis on God’s concern for the fatherless.  As we pray to be more Christ-like, we must pray that our response to the fatherless would be the same as God’s.  There are many in our community who live as fatherless regardless of the presence of a dad in their life.

Pray that God would equip us to help men to live as fathers who honor God and their family.  Pray for the courage and desire to be fathers for those who have none.  Pray for those on the front lines of representing Jesus to the fatherless . . . youth workers, school teachers, school counselors, school staff, coaches, and all others who have consistent contact with young people each day.

Pray for discernment and wisdom to see beyond and through the divisiveness of this world so that you would love others as God loves both you and them.

In prayer,
Tom

Encouragement and Prayer: Be Encouraged By Meeting Together! (06/19/21)

~

While I take a break from the live morning broadcasts I’ve done for the past 14 months, I will still leave some written encouragement for each day.  This week’s focus will be on being encouraged . . . and encouraging others.

“Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another — and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
Hebrews 10:25 (NIV)

This week we look at part two of a two week focus on being encouraged for the purpose of encouraging one another.  The distractions of this world are more than enough to bring discouragement to anyone, so it is important that we keep our eyes focused on the power of God to encourage us so that we can encourage others.

Pray that you would always see value in meeting together for encouragement.  Pray that you would find ways to meet with others to be encouraged and to encourage them.

Pray for discernment and wisdom to see beyond and through the divisiveness of this world so that you would love others as God loves both you and them.

In prayer,
Tom

Encouragement and Prayer: Be Encouraged By Love! (06/18/21)

~

While I take a break from the live morning broadcasts I’ve done for the past 14 months, I will still leave some written encouragement for each day.  This week’s focus will be on being encouraged . . . and encouraging others.

“Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the saints.”
Philemon 1:7 (NIV)

This week we look at part two of a two week focus on being encouraged for the purpose of encouraging one another.  The distractions of this world are more than enough to bring discouragement to anyone, so it is important that we keep our eyes focused on the power of God to encourage us so that we can encourage others.

Pray that you would know the encouragement that comes from being loved.  Pray that your love for people would be an encouragement to them.  Pray that love would bring joy and refreshment to you and to the people around you.

Pray for discernment and wisdom to see beyond and through the divisiveness of this world so that you would love others as God loves both you and them.

In prayer,
Tom

Encouragement and Prayer: Be Encouraged By Sound Doctrine! (06/17/21)

~

While I take a break from the live morning broadcasts I’ve done for the past 14 months, I will still leave some written encouragement for each day.  This week’s focus will be on being encouraged . . . and encouraging others.

“He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.”
Titus 1:9 (NIV)

This week we look at part two of a two week focus on being encouraged for the purpose of encouraging one another.  The distractions of this world are more than enough to bring discouragement to anyone, so it is important that we keep our eyes focused on the power of God to encourage us so that we can encourage others.

Pray that you would be encouraged as you hold firmly to the sound doctrine of scripture.  Pray that you would share sound doctrine in such a way that it encourages others.

Pray for discernment and wisdom to see beyond and through the divisiveness of this world so that you would love others as God loves both you and them.

In prayer,
Tom

Encouragement and Prayer: Be Encouraged By Being United With Christ! (06/16/21)

~

While I take a break from the live morning broadcasts I’ve done for the past 14 months, I will still leave some written encouragement for each day.  This week’s focus will be on being encouraged . . . and encouraging others.

“If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion.”
Philippians 2:1(NIV)

This week we look at part two of a two week focus on being encouraged for the purpose of encouraging one another.  The distractions of this world are more than enough to bring discouragement to anyone, so it is important that we keep our eyes focused on the power of God to encourage us so that we can encourage others.

Pray that you would daily know the comfort and encouragement that comes from being in Christ.  Pray that the encouragement you have from being united with Christ would compel you to live like Christ in encouraging others.

Pray for discernment and wisdom to see beyond and through the divisiveness of this world so that you would love others as God loves both you and them.

In prayer,
Tom
