Encouragement and Prayer: Pure Wisdom! (8/19/24)

“Even a child is known by his actions,
by whether his conduct is pure and right.”
Proverbs 20:11 (NIV)

This week we will focus our prayer emphasis on the subject of living with pure and right conduct.  While it seems that most conversations and teaching about purity center around the topic of sexual purity, I believe the Bible teaches that it is often the impurities in other aspects of our life that leads to sexual impurity.  The door of impure action is often opened by having an impure heart, attitude, thought, or speech.  Pure conduct doesn’t just happen on its own, so this week we will be praying about transforming some areas of our life in order to produce conduct which is pure and right.  Pray that you would be known by your actions as a follower and pursuer of Christ.  Pray for the courage to walk each day by the Spirit’s leading and conviction.  Pray that your representation of Jesus would reflect His purity.  Pray for discernment and wisdom to see beyond and through the divisiveness of this world so that you would love others as God loves both you and them.

“But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.”
James 3:17 (NIV)

As you pray each day this week, pray for a greater desire for, and practice of,  the purity that God desires for you to have.  Ask God to fill you with a wisdom that comes from above and is far greater than human wisdom.  Pray that your life would show to those around you the conduct which comes from pure wisdom.

Chosen To Be . . . PURE! (Sermon Audio)

Chosen To Be . . . PURE! (Sermon Audio)

This is the audio from the August 18, 2024 sermon, “Chosen To Be PURE!”, shared by Tom Lemler at the Deer Run Church of Christ.

Text: 2 Peter 2

“Even a child is known by his actions,
by whether his conduct is pure and right.”
Proverbs 20:11 (NIV)

This morning’s message continued a series through 1 & 2 Peter with a theme of “Chosen To Be . . . “.  As God works the miracle of revival in our life, we discover He does so as the God who chooses us!  This is an important message to all who feel distant from God for whatever reason.  To those believers who are scattered around the known world, God communicates a message that they are known by Him, loved by Him, and chosen by Him.  As we gaze into God’s Word and examine what it means to be chosen by God, we find that we have been chosen to be . . .

  • Protected:  2 Peter 2:1-9

    • As those chosen by God to be pure, it is important to know that in the midst of all the evil in the world, God can and will protect those who are His.
  • Understanding:  2 Peter 2:10-12

    • As those chosen by God to be pure, it is important that we grow in our understanding that God is the One who makes us pure through a cleansing by the blood of Jesus.
  • Repentant:  2 Peter 2:13-16

    • As those chosen by God to be pure, He has an expectation and command that we repent every time we find ourselves caught in sin.
  • Example:  2 Peter 2:17-22

    • As those chosen by God to be pure, we have the privilege of following the example of Jesus so that we can be an example of purity for others.

Today, how will you live as one chosen to be PURE?

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him.”
Jeremiah 17:7 (NIV)

This week’s prayer focus is about living with a confidence that you can be sure of.  I suspect that at one time or another most of us have put our confidence in something that has disappointed or failed us.  God does not want us to live in fear and doubt, but to live with confidence that is well placed because it comes from a trust in Him.  Yes, it may be easier to put our confidence in ourselves or in things we can control, but doing so will always leave us feeling empty and disappointed.  Putting our confidence fully in God will always require faith, but it is a faith that will be rewarded with His blessing.  Pray that you would recognize your need to put your confidence in God above all else.  Pray that you would be sure of your place in God’s kingdom, not because you’re so good but because God’s so good.  Pray that you would be able to live with confidence more fully each day as you allow God to increase your faith and trust in Him.

“So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.  What can man do to me?’”
Hebrews 13:6 (NIV)

As you pray, ask God to help you see just what, or who, it is that you tend to put your confidence in.  Pray that your confidence in the Lord’s help would be greater than your fear of what people might do or say.  Pray that the Lord’s help would give you the confidence to overcome fear that is caused by those who oppose God.  Pray that you would be an instrument of God’s help so that others would experience it more fully.

Chosen To Be . . . SURE! (Sermon Audio)

Chosen To Be . . . SURE! (Sermon Audio)

~

This is the audio from the August 11, 2024 sermon, “Chosen To Be SURE!”, shared by Tom Lemler at the Deer Run Church of Christ.

Text: 2 Peter 1

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him.”
Jeremiah 17:7 (NIV)

This morning’s message continued a series through 1 & 2 Peter with a theme of “Chosen To Be . . . “.  As God works the miracle of revival in our life, we discover He does so as the God who chooses us!  This is an important message to all who feel distant from God for whatever reason.  To those believers who are scattered around the known world, God communicates a message that they are known by Him, loved by Him, and chosen by Him.  As we gaze into God’s Word and examine what it means to be chosen by God, we find that we have been chosen to be . . .

  • Steadfast:  2 Peter 1:1-4

    • We can be sure because of a steadfast faith in a steadfast God.  When we choose to build on the solid foundation of Jesus, we find our house is able to withstand the storms of this world.  When the righteousness we claim is the righteousness of Christ rather than our own, we can be sure that God is with us and not against us.
  • Useful:  2 Peter 1:5-11

    • When we are sure of the work of God in our life, and continually grow in the fruit produced by faith, we find that we are useful instruments prepared to do our Master’s will.  While the specific nature of the work God prepared in advance for us to do may vary from person to person, the useful result of the work is to help us know Jesus and to make Him known.
  • Reminded:  2 Peter 1:12-15

    • Not only are we forgetful people, but the enemy does everything he can to distract us and fill us with doubt.  It does us good to be reminded, and to be those who remind others, of the great value we have as those chosen by God to be His.  The reminders from God’s Word help us to remember how we ought to live and how we ought to represent Jesus.
  • Eternal:  2 Peter 1:15-21

    • Living with our eyes fixed on the eternal prize, which belongs to all who are found in Christ, helps us be sure in our faith.  When the troubles of this world cause us to doubt the goodness of God, we need to step back and look at everything from the perspective of eternity.  When our confidence is built on an eternal God, we can look forward to the day when our faith shall be made visible.

Today, how will you live as one chosen to be SURE?
